Recovery codes let you sign in without your phone. Each works once and is shown once, so keep them safe. You can make a new set and move 2FA to a new phone.
Recovery codes are backup codes you can use to sign in instead of the 6-digit code from the app, when your phone is not with you, lost or broken. You get 8 codes and each one works once.
Keep your recovery codes safe
The system shows recovery codes only right after you turn on 2FA or make a new set. There is no download or print button, and the same set can't be shown again.
-
Write them on paper and keep it where nobody else can pick it up.
-
Or keep them in a password manager that has its own password.
-
Don't keep them on the same phone as your authenticator app; if the phone is lost you lose both.
-
Never send the codes to anyone in a chat. A code is as good as your phone.
Make a new set of recovery codes
Do this when you have used a code, lost your codes, or think someone has seen them.
Tap the circle with your initial at the top right and choose Security.
Tap Generate new recovery codes and enter your password if asked.
Save the new set straight away. Every code in the old set stops working.
Moving to a new phone
There is no button yet to move 2FA to a new phone. Turn 2FA off and on again with the new phone, while you still have the old phone or your recovery codes.
-
Sign in with the old phone or a recovery code.
-
Go to Security, tap Disable and confirm.
-
Tap Enable 2FA and scan the QR code with the app on the new phone, following Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA).
-
Save the new recovery codes, and only then delete the entry from the app on the old phone.
If your role requires 2FA, while it is off the system sends you back to the 2FA setup page every time you open another page, so finish turning it back on in one go.
