Cards that warn when the shop earns less per sale, by category against the previous period and by model below your target. Based on true profit after all costs.
- Who can do this:
- Owner, Store Admin, Manager, Accountant, Auditor (role defaults; the owner can change them)
Margin is profit as a share of sales. The system works it out from the true profit of the devices you have sold, after every cost in the ledger, not just the sale price minus the purchase price. Store Intelligence warns in two ways when the shop earns less on its sales.
Two kinds of card
-
Margin fell in a category: compares the latest period with the period of the same length just before. If a category's margin fell clearly and both periods have enough devices sold, a Needs attention card appears with the profit lost, roughly.
-
Models below the target margin: looks at the true profit per model on devices sold over the last several weeks and compares it with the required profit your shop set in the pricing settings. The default is 10% of the sale price. Only models that sold more than a few devices are counted.
If the sample is too small, the system shows no card rather than guess.
What the card tells you
-
How many records it rests on, and the confidence, which starts modest, rises with more data and never passes the system's ceiling.
-
The data used and what this data cannot tell you, under View evidence and list.
-
The View margin by model report button opens the Margin by model report, which splits margin by model and compares it with the previous period.
What to do
-
Open the margin-by-model report, sorted by lowest margin.
-
Compare with the True profit report per unit to see which cost grew, such as repairs, parts or fees.
-
Check your buying prices with Check Safe Buy before you buy and the discounts given at sale.
-
If a model stays under target, lower the buying price or stop buying it.
Good to know
The card cannot say why the margin fell. It could be buying prices, repairs, discounts or a different mix of goods. The target margin is a value your shop set, not a market standard, and the figures are decision support, not a guarantee of results.
The card is shown only to people with View financial reports, because it concerns profit, and it is sent as a morning alert to those who have margin alerts switched on, see The notification bell and inbox.
