A device sold at a loss gets its causes separated: selling below cost, price cuts, repair overruns, fees and storage. The causes add up to the loss exactly.

Who can do this:
Owner, Store Admin, Manager, Accountant, Auditor (role defaults; the owner can change them)

When a device is sold at a loss, the card on the overview and the Net profit and causes of loss report break down why. The causes add up to the device's loss exactly, and every number comes from the device's cost ledger, not from an estimate.

The seven causes

  • Sold below the purchase price: The price was below what the device cost, from the day it was priced

  • Price cut from the first list price: It was listed high, then cut until it sold below the purchase price. The system reads this from the price-change history

  • Repair above what was expected: The repair cost more than expected at purchase. If no repair was expected at all, the whole repair is counted here

  • Repair as expected: A repair that was expected, but the margin did not cover it

  • Fees and commission: Platform fees, card fees and commission

  • Holding cost: Storage costs recorded on the device

  • Other costs (shipping, promotions, etc.): Shipping, promotions and other costs

When it sold above the purchase price but still lost

The margin over the purchase price is used to pay for the costs first. What is left, which is what caused the loss, is split in proportion to each cost, in whole satang so the total is exact.

Tap a cause on the card to see the devices and the amount for each.

  • Price cuts and selling below the purchase price: The system finds devices of the same model still in stock and listed above the market price range, and gives the price it expects with the confidence and the number of records. Open the device to change the price yourself; the system never changes it for you

  • Repair above what was expected: Enter a realistic repair cost when valuing so Safe Buy takes the whole repair off

  • Fees: Check the fee of each sales channel.

What isn't in the total

The cost of tied-up money, which your shop sets as a percentage per month, isn't recorded in the device's ledger, so it appears as an estimate under the card and isn't added to the causes. Storage costs that were really recorded do count as a cause. See Holding cost.

Frequently asked questions

If it sold above the purchase price but still lost money, what is the cause?

The other costs were larger than the margin, such as repair and fees. The system uses the margin to pay for costs first, then splits what is left in proportion to each cost.

Is the cost of tied-up money in the causes?

No. It is shown separately as an estimate, because it isn't recorded in the device's ledger. Storage costs that were really recorded do count as a cause.
